This first week in May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness week. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard mothers describe iterations of the following:
“I think I had a touch of postpartum depression, but I didn’t realize it until after my baby’s first birthday.”
“When my baby was a newborn, it was so hard. I couldn’t sleep when she was sleeping and I was terrified to leave the house. But I got over it after a few months… ”
“Things were not good when I went back to work. I was irritable and crying all the time. But I don’t think I had postpartum depression, I worked through it on my own and I’m fine now.”
So many women suffer and do not even know there are resources available. Even if you're not sure if you have postpartum depression you can still reach out. So many moms think they need to “pull themselves together” and figure it out on their own or only have their partner as their support. This is not true, and we need to be talking about maternal mental health and normalizing how common mental health issues are in the prenatal and postpartum time. In fact, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common medical complication of childbirth.
If you find yourself experiencing some of these symptoms, please ask for help. These mental health issues are treatable and you don’t have to suffer in silence or be ashamed you are experiencing them. It does not mean you are a bad mom or that you could prevented this through willpower somehow. To learn more about signs and symptoms click here.
